The Omaha Mavericks Hockey team is 5-2-1 after a split with the Wisconsin Badgers at Baxter Arena on Nov. 8-9. This week Jason and Jon discuss the UNO Hockey team’s recent tussle with the Badgers, atmospheric enhancements unveiled by the athletic department during the series, and the upcoming trip to Kalamazoo to take on the Western Michigan Broncos in the team’s first NCHC matchup of the season.
It’s a big series for UNO Hockey as #12 Wisconsin comes into Baxter Arena to take on the #20 ranked Mavericks. The @OmahaHKY Twitter account unveiled the team’s new “intro video” for the 2019-20 season. Those familiar with Ak-Sar-Ben lore will notice images at the beginning of the video harkening back to the days when the Aksarben Village property (which sits across the street from UNO’s Baxter Arena) was a horse racing track. The compilation also intersperses clips of UNO Hockey players at Baxter Arena with footage of a bucking bull in a dirt pen. The Beastie Boys song “Sabotage” plays through this year’s intro video.

UNO Hockey sophomore forward Tyler Weiss is featured as the #2 play in the “NCHC Top 5 Plays of the Week” (presented by TRIA Orthopaedic Center) for “Week 4” of the 2019-20 season. The unassisted goal — at the 12:52 mark in the 2nd period of UNO’s Nov. 1 game at Alaska Anchorage — was one of two goals for Weiss on the night. Freshman defenseman Brandon Scanlin was named “Rookie of the Week” as part of the “Bauer NCHC Players of the Week” for Oct. 28 - Nov. 3, 2019. Scanlin netted his first collegiate goal in UNO’s series at Alaska-Anchorage on Oct. 31 - Nov. 1. He also had a pair of assists in the series.
