UNO Hockey sophomore forward Taylor Ward is featured as the #5 play in the “NCHC Top 5 Plays of the Week” (presented by TRIA Orthopaedic Center) for “Week 7” of the 2019-20 season.

The goal — at the 19:26 mark of the 3rd period of UNO’s Nov. 15 game at Western Michigan — allowed the Mavs to narrow the Broncos’ two-goal lead in the closing moments of the game (UNO ultimately lost 3-2).

Our friend Ben Matukewicz is a fan who has been working on compiling a UNO Hockey jersey database the past few years featuring all the uniform variations the team has worn throughout the program’s history.

From time to time he also shares uniform concepts on Facebook and Twitter under the project’s moniker “Crimson & Black.” Matukewicz’s latest concept stems from one of the university’s early club team uniforms.

Last year I wrote an article about UNO’s club program during the 1970s (a period that almost saw the team move up to the varsity level). I mentioned in the blog post that the university played club hockey as early as the 1940s (according to the Omaha World-Herald archives).

Matukewicz’s “Heritage Uniform Concept” graphic above includes a picture of an early University of Omaha club team (on the left side — believed to be from 1947).

His overall concept is very cool — love that retro vibe!

I profiled Matukewicz and his creative pursuits on my personal blog in 2018. He is the co-founder of Aksarben Creative, and does some terrific graphic design work.

Be sure to follow Crimson & Black on Facebook and Twitter

Another week, another Omaha rookie garnering “Rookie of the Week” honors as part of the “Bauer NCHC Players of the Week” for Nov. 4-10, 2019.

Freshman forward Nolan Sullivan scored his first collegiate goal in UNO’s series versus Wisconsin on Nov. 1-2 at Baxter Arena. Sullivan was a “face-off wizard” in the series, winning 72.7 percent of his face-offs against the Badgers.

The @OmahaHKY Twitter account unveiled the team’s new “intro video” for the 2019-20 season.

Those familiar with Ak-Sar-Ben lore will notice images at the beginning of the video harkening back to the days when the Aksarben Village property (which sits across the street from UNO’s Baxter Arena) was a horse racing track.

The compilation also intersperses clips of UNO Hockey players at Baxter Arena with footage of a bucking bull in a dirt pen. The Beastie Boys song “Sabotage” plays through this year’s intro video.

Check out the new intro video below:
