Two UNO Maverick Hockey players — senior forward Jack Randl and senior goaltender Jake Kucharski — are featured in the NCHC Top 5 Plays of the Week – Nov. 30, 2022.

Randl’s first period goal in the Nov. 26 game at Denver is the #4 play this week. The goal — set up by a backhand pass from junior forward Matt Miller down low — tied the score 1-1 with 9:29 left in the period.

Kucharski’s sprawling save in the first period of the Nov. 26 game at Denver is the #1 play this week.

The net-side save (with 13:45 left in the period) thwarted DU sophomore forward Tristan Broz’s opportunity to put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the game.

The Omaha Maverick Hockey team snared three players in the KJ Branding National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Players of the Week — Nov. 21-27, 2022.

Matt Miller’s offensive heroics propelled the junior to NCHC Forward of the Week honors. Miller’s two-goal performance in the Nov. 25 tilt at Denver spurred the Mavs to a 3-0 shutout win over the top-ranked Pioneers. Miller also tallied a goal and two assists in a 6-3 loss to DU on Nov. 26. Miller has 11 points in 11 games this season.

Defenseman Jonny Tychonick had four assists on the weekend and was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week. The grad student had an assist on each of UNO’s goals in the team’s 3-0 win on Nov. 25. He also had an assist on Miller’s third period goal during the Nov. 26 game.

In addition to Tychonick’s offensive prowess during the DU series, his play in the defensive zone on special teams was key for Omaha during the DU series.

For the second time this season, senior goaltender Jake Kucharski netted NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors.

Kucharski pitched a 3-0 shutout for the Mavs on Nov. 25. It was Kucharski’s first shutout of the season (his fourth career shutout at the collegiate level) and his first shutout for UNO.

The Erie, Pa. native has a 2.38 GAA this season and a .920 save percentage.

If Kucharski sees continued success in net (and if the defense achieves consistency), he is on pace to have the best Maverick netminder GAA since Ryan Massa in the 2014-15 season.

In total, Kucharski faced 56 shots in the series at DU and made 51 saves on the weekend.
