Omaha Maverick Hockey junior forward Jacob Slipec netted the #4 play in the NCHC Top 5 Plays of the Week – Oct. 16, 2024.

Slipec’s goal came at a critical juncture against UMass at the 2024 Ice Breaker Tournament in Las Vegas on Oct. 11. The Mavs and Minutemen were tied 1-1 in the latter stages of the third period.

The native of White Rock, British Columbia, netted the go-ahead goal 16:56 into the third period, doing a little “shake-n-bake” move to maneuver to the high slot. He fired the puck past UMass goalie Michael Hrabal.

The goal put UNO up 2-1. The Mavs went on to win the game 3-2 in overtime.

Omaha Hockey junior goaltender Simon Latkoczy and junior defenseman Jacob Guevin were named “Goaltender of the Week” and “Defenseman of the Week” (respectively) in the KJ Branding NCHC Players of the Week: Oct. 7-13, 2024.

Latkoczy stopped 77 total shots during the Ice Breaker Tournament in Las Vegas in games against UMass and Minnesota — 53 of the stops occurred in the championship game against Minnesota on Oct. 12 (tying a school record). Latkoczy had a .963 SV% and a 1.44 GAA on the weekend.

Guevin tallied 1 goal and 2 assists during UNO’s two games at the Ice Breaker Tournament. He also had two blocked shots during the tournament. His goal was the game-winning goal in overtime of the championship game (off an assist from forward Tanner Ludtke), securing a 2-1 win over Minnesota (making the Mavs the Ice Breaker Tournament champions).

Both performances helped UNO to a 2-0 record to start the 2024-25 season.

  • Tuesday, October 08, 2024 1:20 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Omaha Mavericks Hockey Coach Mike Gabinet received a contract extension through the 2027-28 season (per the UNO Athletic Department).

Gabinet is currently leading the Mavericks into the 2024-25 season. This is Gabinet’s eighth season at the helm of the UNO Hockey program (he was elevated after one season as the team’s associate head coach in 2017).

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Gabinet is 117-114-18 during his tenure as UNO’s head hockey coach.  The Mavericks have twice appeared in the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament since he has been at the helm.

Gabinet’s best result at Omaha came in the 2023-24 season. The Mavericks went 23-13-4, making it to the championship game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff and earning a trip to the NCAA regional in Sioux Falls.

UNO has had a winning record each of the past four seasons (the most consecutive winning seasons in program history).

Gabinet is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and played for four seasons with the Mavericks (2000-04).

The Mavericks start the 2024-25 regular season campaign at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Oct. 11-12. Omaha takes on UMass in the first game of the tournament on Oct. 11.
