2019-20 Goaltending

Three freshmen goaltenders on the roster. This is a precarious position for the Mavericks to start the season from.

Even if Tomek returns, it is still a roster absent of any experience or success at the college level.

It's a lower level than 2003-04 with Haaland, Holt, and Tebbs. Granted, Holt emerged from the group to be one of the more dependable goalies the program has seen... the following season. But remember, Holt was an early arrival following the last-minute departure of Ellis.

There were a lot of questions going into that season. There were a lot more going into 2005-06 with Aarnio, Barrett, and Kaufmann. But remember, Kaufmann was the last of that trio to get a chance - and he didn't relinquish it.

And while everyone swoons over Ellis, let's not forget - he was never supposed to be here. Ellis, himself was a late replacement when Jensen bailed on his commitment.

Or maybe the best comparable is that inaugural 1997-98 team. A team of unknowns from top-to-bottom. Mitchell had college experience, and everyone was excited about Sidoruk and his major-junior experience. But whose name is forever in the record book for the first win and first shutout? McLeod.

    So what's my point?

We're all expecting to ride Saville (and Tomek, if he stays) this season. But don't write off the names at the bottom of the roster. Maybe Roden steals the net early, like Kaufmann. Or maybe Zab as a complete wild card is the one to take the headlines.

I think the only angst looks like this...

    1. It didn’t feel like a priority because of the nature of recruiting.

    2. Only time, and evidence, will erase doubt.

you and I discussed options, but they were not based on actual game views. Scouting reports, second hand info, etc. when they strap em and take shots, we’ll know...
