Bringing this thread back from the old board:
so far DU has been better than expected. I still think UMD and SCSU are the head of the class so far but lots of hockey left
UNO faces a tough western michigan team this weekend. It's a bad style matchup, and lawson is a tough place to play.
the weekly recap will be coming back Sunday. I know everyone has twitter facebook and podcasts now plus instagram and snapchat but I'm old school....
Good to have you back, Quinn!
Looking forward to seeing your recap Quinn!
The first weekend is in the books for the NCHC. mavs earn a split at western after getting pummeled Friday.
wade allison not in the lineup saturday for wmu. that's a different bronco team with him not available.
prior to saturday The Mavericks were giving up an astounding 5.22 goals per game. Their team save percentage of .846 is 59th of 60 college hockey teams (only Harvard’s is worse). that is not sustainable.
St. Cloud with an impressive sweep over du. even though DU lost they were competitive and if I were DU fan (there's only one in existence) I would be happy so far having replaced half the team.
UMD keeps rolling along nicely and miami and UND with a split. I'm not impressed with either und or miami so far.
elsewhere: how good is umass? goes to show what can happen when you hire a decent coach. it reminds me of notre dame -- a school with a ton of resources that finally decided to invest in their hockey program.
How about the dumpster fire that is st. lawrence? bet lots of fans are having buyers remorse at the mark morris hire. he comes with a very checkered past, and that team flat out is bad.
the WCHA has won more games out of conference than all of last year. Lake state has had a strong start to the season while NMU is off to a slow start and has been a bit of a disappointment
Arizona state should crack the rankings for the first time in program history. they need a plan for what to do on their arena situation. supposedly something is in the works but I will believe it when I see it.
UNO has given up 49 goals (so far) this season — worst in the NCAA.
To put that in perspective... during our Frozen Four season in 2014-15, we gave up 90 goals total all season.
The fact that UNO won as many games last season giving up ~3.7 goals per game is either a testament to departed seniors like David Pope, Tyler Vesel, and Jake Randolph... or it was just dumb luck.
I'm really liking UMass's play right now? Is it sustainable? Maybe, but gotta like their chances.
Ditto Arizona State. Mayyyybe UNO shouldn't have agreed to a home-and-home.
Can you imagine if ASU gets its own arena... and the team finds its way into either the NCHC or the B1G...?
Johnny Walker has a nation-leading 11 goals on the season — and he’s only in his second season with the Sun Devils.
Give that program a facility it can recruit to and it could very easily become one of the best in college hockey on a perennial basis.
As Connor suggests, UNO playing ASU on an annual basis going forward (as Gabinet has said will happen to some fans) is pretty intriguing. I just hope we can break through against them after Thanksgiving.
I’ll be interested to see what happens this season when UNO faces Duluth, Denver, St. Cloud and North Dakota. It’s one thing to get splits against Miami and Western Michigan... it is another to go toe-to-toe against the upper half of the NCHC.
And I agree with Quinn that WMU is a different team without Wade Allison...
No uno hockey this week but plenty to discuss:
For UNO hopefully tyler weiss will be ready to go soon. bye week good chance to heal up for the mavs before they get back into action
Western with a sweep of UND: western is a dangerous offensive team and I don't think the talent level at und is what it once was. if wmu gets their goaltending situation stabilized (Gorsuch, Cain and Blacker have all gotten starts this year) wmu will be good with the return of wade allison (even though he was a scratch friday)
DU should have swept UMD -- two words for DU - Devin Cooley. he was excellent all weekend for the pios. DU fans were in a panic when larsson was out with a lower body injury but cooley has played exceptional.
Miami and CC split: CC will be a tough out for anyone this year. they were my pick to sneak into a home playoff spot and I'm standing by that
St. cloud sweeps the sleep inducing style of play that is bemidji. folks that st cloud team is very very good. I expect we will see them in buffalo at the end of the year.
Air force with two losses against AIC: Air force is really struggling this year and atlantic hockey may see a new representative in the tourney. keep an eye out for army. they are much better than their record indicates
in the battle of the dumpster fires: Minnesota splits with St. lawrence. Bob motzko may like the bright lights and big city plus his bank account but the UMTC is not very good. attendance is way down and st cloud is the much better program and honestly the much better coaching job.
the pride on ice has turned into the garbage can on ice. if i were st cloud fan I would point and laugh.
The stable of forwards WMU has on its roster is really solid. If they start playing with more consistency, they could be a tough draw in the NCHC when January rolls around.
I have always enjoyed pointing and laughing at Minnesota, even if I'm not as big a St. Cloud fan as I used to be.
