No mav hockey this week but plenty to discuss:

How about UAF?  goes on the road to split at DU:  UAF now sitting at 18th in the pwr -- not bad for a team that was left for dead not to long ago.

Speaking of things that are dead:  UND had to struggle mightily to win both games against lindenwood.  UND was behind both nights but found a way to eek out a win.  Lindenwood has put a scare into a lot of teams this year, but something is definitely not well in Grand Forks.

UMD gets a win and a tie against an always difficult bemidji state team:  hopefully that momentum doesn't carry over when they visit omaha next weekend.

St. Cloud goes for the sweep today against the U of M:  keep an eye on that one.   would be a huge win for the cloud.

Michigan Tech just keeps grinding with a pair of nice wins against asu and taking down BU this weekend.   MTU just 5 points from the top spot in the new CCHA

Merrimack (the new overlords of hockey east) produces a couple of clunkers loosing to brown of all teams.

congrats to UNH who I believe got their first hockey east win against providence of all teams.

Ohio state quietly having themselves a great season -- don't get much ink but they take down MSU in impressive fashion.   -- I would not want to play them in the playoffs.

Lots to unpack from this weekend:

Nice gritty sweep for the mavs this weekend:  as others has mentioned the offense looks much more dynamic with lemay in the lineup.  better puck movement and faster breakouts.

Thought Latkoczy was very solid on saturday.  very nice to have two very capable goaltenders and also was nice to see.

also: although he doesn't show up on the stat sheet, how about the play of nolan sullivan?  does all the little things that leads to success.  very impressed with how he has played.

how about the play of Jake Pivonka? no one with confuse him with mike bossy (young people look him up) but he is scoring timely goals when it matters.

now: if they drop games to miami that is unacceptable. (I was going to comment on the gabinet contract extention -- please send condolences and sympathy cards to baxter arena section 214 row A seats 11-12

elsewhere:  can we just give the penrose to DU now?  impressive beat down of miami.

UMD has some talent but they are very raw and young.  also -- I got to say hello to none other than @BruceCiskie -- that should be a top 5 event for everyone.  a bucket list item for sure!!

North dakota:  oops.  desperate times call for desperate measures:  for und per Brad schlossman: Grand Forks native Kaleb Johnson started in goal saturday. first start in 600 days. The last came May 25, 2021, when he was with Minnesota Wilderness in NAHL. His last start in The Ralph: 2018 N.D. state title game with GF Central.

    needless to say:  didn't work

also tony granato watch day five hunderd -- Not only did wisconsin lose its exhibition game against the U.S. Under-18 Team 6-1 friday but Carson Bantle got a fighting DQ so he's out for next Friday's game against Ohio State.

and I hate to say it again, but the Big10 might be good.

Merrimack gets a split against providence -- merrimack was starting to circle the drain a little bit.

BU gets a gritty win against a pretty good Cornell team.

I was able to successfully click all the traffic lights successfully to logon -- I feel special.

Believe it or not, I didn't think Lemay was much of a factor -- but I don't want to discount that maybe he's a vocal leader on the bench and in the room.

Latkoczy has been really good, lately. We had the discussion about Kucharski leading up to the series. I thought both goals Friday were savable.

I chirped a Duluth fan on Twitter. Need to get right with the hockey gods before the above happens. Anyone know what the going sacrifice rate is?

For what it's worth, I think Lemay showed some rust, especially with regard to that play where he passed to Duluth in front of the net where he almost gave one up. I think that he needs to be with Guevin, that is the combo. He makes Guevin better and that is where he was prior to the injury.

All in all, a good weekend. Not great, but good, for the entire team. Need to capitalize on those chances though. Really want to see them come out that way against Miami. Ludvig Pearson (sp?) will be a different case, gotta get to him early or it(they) will be a long night(s).

Go Mavs! Crowd was incredible. Can't believe the refs didn't call the trip!

Despite some uncertain play and the always present doubts about this teams performance against miami the mavs were able to pull off a sweep.

-- There are 8 conference games left and although the mavs can finish anywhere in the standings I just have a good feeling about the rest of the season.   could this finally be the year the mavs get out of the first round?  if they had some odds on that happening I would put a little cash down.

usually the mavs leave conference points on the table but that win against miami is huge.   I'm starting to believe.

    elsewhere:

with apologies to @gohuskieswooooo -- victory drinks engage and hold off on that penrose celebration for denver.
big sweep for the cloud.   Think I underestimated them in a major way.

The NCHC pillow fight between UMD and UND ended up in a split.  hard to believe that UND is 7th.  they have some serious issues and I don't know if that can be fixed with the current roster.  UMD is just having issues scoring.  I expect much better things from UMD next year.

Western continues to score in bunches.  Now leading the NCAA in goals scored per game.  if they can tighten up defensively they will be a tough out.

elsewhere:  Quinnipiac didn't have a good weekend and merrimack contines to circle the drain.

Haven't talked much about RIT but they could be the atlantic hockey representative this year

    10 games, Quinn:

    @ WMU

    vs. CC

@ Miami-OHIO (where we will leave points on the table)

    vs. SCSU

    @ UND

I think we can all just burn the film from the friday night game -- that was pretty awful in every stretch of the imagination.

Saturday UNO gets a 40 save shutout from Latkoczy to get a very important split.  I will gladly take the points at this time of year.  The mavs have put themselves in great position to finally get a first round playoff series at home.  I'm gonna take it one game at a time.   get some rest next weekend and then some winnable games down the stretch.

I think I would be tempted to ride latkoczy in goal the rest of the way and although Randl didn't show up on the score sheet thought he had a very strong game saturday.

    elsewhere:

speaking of goalie tandems if I were saint cloud the jaxon castor experiment probably needs to come to an end.  SCSU also probably needs to spend a little time working on their special teams -- specifically the penalty kill.  gotta hand it to UMD though -- big sweep for them and they are a very dangerous team.  Glad UNO got them on the schedule early.

Miami's defense continues to be non-existent as they give up an ocho to UND.  -- Miami is on the mav's schedule in a couple weeks and I'm cautiously optimistic that the mavs take care of business in oxford.

BU with a very impressive sweep of BC -- that coaching change made a huge difference out there.

RIT drops a game to holy cross in OT.  RIT still has the inside track for the atlantic hockey autobid and are currently 15th in the PWR (according to uscho)

Michigan with a big sweep of Penn state --  it will be interesting to see the Big10 down the stretch -- lots of good teams and there will be some pairwise movement among all of them.

Give it up for the michigan tech huskies -- nice sweep against their rival northern michigan.   if tech makes the ncaa tournament probably a good idea to hide the women and the beer.

It was over before I even got home. Did not watch the first 30 minutes.

It's Simon's net. Kucharski's career ended with 3 saves on 7 shots, Friday. Spot duty, graduate.

...if I were saint cloud the jaxon castor experiment probably needs to come to an end.

Both SCSU goalies still have high save percentages, and I still question Basse's abilities. I'm shocked by the numbers there. Not what I expected from that combination. It was questionable going into the season. They've actually been a strength -- or SCSU is limiting high-end opportunities. Castor is the better of the two.

gotta hand it to UMD though -- big sweep for them and they are a very dangerous team.  Glad UNO got them on the schedule early.

I think we all expected Sandelin to build this team throughout the season. Just took a little longer, this year.

    Nope. We'll drop points there.

Friday was just a bad start and it went downhill from there. Simon played well on Friday in backing up Kucharski and was stellar on Saturday. Jake was the victim of sloppiness, but I agree on whose net it should be.

Tychonic, Berg and Weiss all played well, face offs were strongly in our favor, Randall and Guevin had strong performances.

The only poor play seemed to be the stripes. Not sure what that was about, but it seemed that they were punishing Omaha on Saturday night. I missed the embellishment call, but Bremer is 5’9”. Wouldn’t take much to put him down from behind. At least McAllister went with him. Good trade.
