Last Thursday and Friday, the Mavs traveled over 3,000 miles to Anchorage, Alaska to face the Seawolves. Even though UNO (#20 USCHO.com) played less than stellar hockey, the Mavs were able to grind out a win on Thursday and a tie on Friday. Sloppy play hindered UNO at times and allowed UAA to keep it close in each game. A win is a win, however, and the Mavs are now ranked in the USCHO.com poll for the first time since March 2018.

One bright spot for UNO is Tyler Weiss. The Colorado Avalanche prospect had two goals and one assist on the weekend, including a fantastic goal on Saturday that I’m still recovering from. Weiss is set to be one of the offensive leaders in the conference.

For a full recap, along with other topics of mutual interest, listen to the Mavpuckcast with Jason and Jon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQK0p1pcvRw.

UNO now returns home to face the Wisconsin Badgers (#12, USCHO.com). Jason Combs’ pick for the 2020 national championship, the Badgers have not impressed as yet this season (although it is still quite early). The Badgers were swept last weekend by an impressive Penn State in University Park. This is a great opportunity for the Mavericks, properly focused, to get one or two wins here to finish out the non-conference portion of the season, and it is certainly possible, especially since they do not have to travel 3,000 miles to a game.

Both games will be at Baxter Arena beginning at 7:07 PM. The Mavs return to NCHC.TV for streaming coverage for both nights. Additionally, Saturday’s game will be on CBS All Access (Star Trek: Discovery watchers rejoice!), so if you do not have a subscription to NCHC.TV, consider picking one up for Saturday’s game if you can’t make it to the game. As always, the game will be on the radio at 1180 AM or the TuneIn Radio app.

    Looking ahead

The Mavs open up conference play on the road next week against Western Michigan. The Broncos are 3-3-2 and face Ferris State this weekend in a home-and-home matchup.

Thanks for reading. Keep living the #nonyikes life!

    Some interesting notes...

    1. We found out yesterday that it is “Military Appreciation Weekend”... I think that was the first I heard about it. I wonder if this is because Monday is Veterans Day, and the “priority candidate” for NU President (Vice Admiral Walter “Ted” Carter) is going to be in attendance.

(Much earlier than it typically is — it was in February last season.)

    2. UNO is teasing on Twitter something involving “fog” at Baxter Arena this weekend. My guess is that they are unveiling a new “inflatabull” (for the team to skate out thru) like they had in the early years of the program.

The @OmahaHKY Twitter account has unleashed the team’s 2019-20 intro video.

The video starts off with clips from the old AK-SAR-BEN days (when the property that houses Aksarben Village housed horse racing and livestock shows), and features video of a live bull (interspersed among images of UNO Hockey players skating in Baxter Arena).

    Take a look...

    Game 1:

Was alot closer than the score showed. Most of the game looked like we were the better team. Puck luck wasn't with us.

Wisconsin plays a physical game. Matched with our physicality made for an interesting game.

We need to stay out of the box. Even though they didnt have a pp goal. Penalties killed alot of moment, especially on that 5 minute major. Also going 1-7 on the pp is a little concerning, wisky Goalie made several good saves but the post out saved him.

Savy is tougher than graphene. He gets bang up every game it feels like. But stays in there. I wouldn't be surprised if Gabs rested him. But also still expect him to play. S/O to knoepke for sticking up for him.

If we clean up the game and get the puck luck Wisconsin had, we can definitely get game 2.

Pretty much agree with everything you mentioned...

UNO had so many opportunities throughout the game — it’s unfortunate that some of those shots didn’t drop or we’d be talking about a different outcome.

    1. I didn’t think Wisconsin looked as good as some have touted. They do have some talented forwards and goaltending was decent, but UNO skated with them the entire game.

    2. Is it just me, or does it seem like other teams try to *run* Saville each game? How many times have opposing players stormed the crease and interfered with him? Seems like a lot...

    3. They DEFINITELY need to stay out of the box. IMO, refs are calling too many ticky-tack penalties, but the team dealt with that last season.

    4. Some might disagree, but I might’ve waited until UNO had established themselves in the offensive zone before I pulled Saville. It felt early to me. At that point UNO was down 3-2.

    5. Hats off to Brandon Scanlin. He had great opportunities throughout the game — especially in the third. The guy put up a lot of points when he was with the Brooks Bandits last season. Should be fun to watch as the season progresses.

Hopefully they can get things going in tonight’s game.
