NCHC TV problems

    This may not be NCHC’s fault but the video and sound for Saturday’s game had a lot of problems, at least for me:

    1. The video “starts” but I had nothing but a black screen and no sound for about 7 minutes, when the pre-game warm ups started.
    2. At around 10 minutes later the video just stops. I finally just advanced the feed an additional 15 minutes and the video/sound worked again, but see the next point.
    3. The actual game broadcast sound was very poor quality and at a low level. There are several UNO promo commercials and when they played the sound quality was good but the volume level was extremely high because I had turned the volume up  to be able to hear the in game comments. When the game restarts the quality and volume both drop by quite a bit.
    Viewing other schools I see/hear some of the same problems, but not for the schools that use a either a local or regional broadcaster.

    I don’t want to complain to NCHC TV if the problem isn’t theirs. It also possible the problem is on my equipment, but the UNO promo’s sound being good makes me think the problem isn’t on my end.

    Did anyone else watch Saturday’s game on NCHC.TV and did you have any problems?

    A number of subscribers on Twitter have been having a variety of issues... on various platforms. 

    It appears that the app is a "work in progress"... Sidearm Sports (part of Learfield) took over streaming operations from NeuLion during the offseason. 

    Let me ask this... when you login on the NCHC.tv site and try to watch, are the issues the same?

    I haven't watched the archived stream yet, but I'm going to head upstairs and check it out on the AppleTV app.

    I’m on the Apple TV App. Going to www.NCHC.TV on my computer and I get the same results. Had to turn off my content blocker for the site to work, but I don’t view that as a content provider problem.

    Tried it in both Firefox and Safari browsers and had the same problems as I had with the ATV app.

    Okay... I'm hopeful that the folks behind NCHC.tv will be able to straighten things out.

    I had an issue on Friday night, I was at my grandsons FB game and tried listening to the game on my phone at 1180thezone.  I've always been able to do this in the past (for away games, when not at home) but Friday all I got was an announcement that the feed was blocked by "The sports team or media".  

    I went to NCHC-tv on my phone and was able to watch. 

    Anyone know anything about that?

    On another note, I watched the Digital Media replay of the game this morning.  Thought they did a good job, the ads for UNO were well done. 

    The thing I did not like, after the game leaving the parking lot and driving home, I have always enjoyed the recap, out of town scoreboard, 3 Stars and 7th man award done by Terry.  They didn't have any of that, just kind of said thanks and signed off.

    Byron: Good question about streaming the radio feed on your smartphone (or other digital device)... we actually address this in this week's podcast (which will be out soon)... 

    Another fan we know was unable to attend Friday's game, but wanted to listen to the 1180 AM broadcast on the app (I believe it was the TuneIn app). 

    Bernie lives in Bellevue, and also received an error message like the one you received when trying to listen. 

    He contacted NRG Media (owner of KZOT 1180 AM) and received this response from the program director: 

    "Thanks for this note — our apologies — there is some sort of glitch we are looking into it now — UNO thru their partner Learfield has a new rule restricting the stream to a 75 mile radius and YES you are well within that — having computer people check on it now" 

    So that was likely the reason you weren't able to listen to the game on your phone. 

    I'm not sure why Learfield (who handles marketing duties for UNO Athletics — along with a number of other collegiate athletic departments around the nation) is restricting the stream to a 75-mile radius.

    Don't really want to speculate.

    I would imagine that there are player parents around North America (and points beyond) who would like to have access to those streams.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    I'll try the twitter contact you mentioned. I didn't know that the 1180 limited broadcast to 75 miles. What if you are trying to listen over the internet from out of state? I do (obviously) have the NCHC app so I might be able to watch it, but a lot of time I'm sent to places where the hotel either doesn't have wifi or it's so slow that streaming doesn't work. Usually even a crappy wifi can handle a streaming radio broadcast.

    My understanding is that Learfield/IMG controls the rights to UNO's broadcasts. 

    Beyond that, I don't know if the 75-mile radius policy is "set in stone," or not. Based on what I've heard, I believe this decision will be rectified in the future. 

    As far as NCHC.tv goes...

    Hockey East is set to appear on CBS All Access this season — $5.99/month. That's a streaming service we already have as cord cutters, and the price — which includes all of CBS's other content — is pretty reasonable for the ~6 month hockey season. 

    The ECAC has all of their games on ESPN+ ($4.99/month for all of the multi-sport content on ESPN+).

    I know that NCHC.tv generates quite a bit of revenue for the conference and its member schools. But I just wonder if they'll eventually have to go with a more "robust" streaming partner — as opposed to going it alone. 

    As 4K (and 8K) TVs become more common, the technical demands will become more difficult. 

    And as time progresses, more people will be streaming in general. 

    It wouldn't surprise me to see the NCHC games on one of these services in the next 3-5 years.

    The potential is there with NCHC tv to broadcast college sports that bigger networks aren’t interested in televising, but I don’t know how well for some of the sports the coverage would be. From my narrow viewpoint if I could get all of the hockey games I’d be happy with something like Fox Sports but lots of UNO fans also follow volleyball and basketball and soccer and baseball  in both men’s and women’s and  no one is going to cover all those sports for such a small audience, especially since it requires contracts with multiple conferences to get the broadcast rights.  But if more was available that was UNO specific I would watch.

    Long story short, I don’t care who carries them as long as it’s dependable and not above what others pay for the same service at their school.

    Are we sure the issues on Saturday were not related to the Maverick Digital Network?
