After a weekend with zero points the bye week can't come soon enough.  Time to rest and recharge.   Have some very winnable games coming up (even though miami has gotten a little better as the season has gone along)  lots of hockey left.

DU vs und next week should be a barnburner.

WMU coming off a beatdown of RPI get miami.  I could see western splitting that series.

as mentioned a couple of weeks ago, kevin sneddon of vermont steps down at the end of the year.   will be very interesting to see who replaces him.

Providence has now lost 4 in a row after getting swept by umass.   Hockey east standings are crazy right now with only 7 points between northeastern (in 9th) with 17 points and umass in first with 24

Mankato all but locks up the wcha with a sweep against nmu.

Big 10 race has also gone off the rails with msu osu and minnesota all 2 points behind penn state.  minnesota has really turned it around after an abysmal start to the year.

No Mav hockey but some interesting results this weekend

DU now on a 4 game skid having been swept by UND.  UND all but locks up the penrose.   DU also has a couple key guys out of the lineup.  brink is supposedly day to day.   Heikenen also out of saturday's game.  of more concern is a suddenly resurgent st cloud is now only 3 points behind du.

longer term it will be interesting to see what happens to und when it's time for the NCAA regional.  DU is host in the west so they can't be moved.   if things hold I expect the committee to send UND out east and ship umd to loveland.

WMU takes 4 of 6 from miami this weekend setting up a battle for 2nd between them and UMD next weekend.

Cornell and Clarkson stay neck and neck in the ECAC.

the rise of bemidji continues with an impressive sweep of northern michigan.  bemidji is in at large range for an ncaa spot.   huge series in a couple of weeks against mankato.

speaking of teams on the rise, minnesota after a horrid start is now tied atop the big 10 standings.

the struggles at providence continue  --  getting a tie against lowly vermont.   the rest of hockey east is bonkers.   boston college at northeastern this thursday.  could have a bit of clarity but not much.   BC Umass and northeastern all in the top 10 of the pwr rankings and maine and umass lowell floating on the cut line.   could have 5 or 6 hockey east teams in the NCAA this year.

There are no nights off in NCHC play except for UNO that took a nite off on saturday.  Unacceptable is the only way I can describe saturday.   again the old mav bugaboo of playing down to the competition reared it's ugly head.  with St Cloud coming on strong with their big weekend against UND those home playoff tickets get crediofted to our account (again)

of bigger concern is ward's heath.  wasn't putting any weight on that leg and he may be out the rest of the year.

one positive from the weekend was I got to run into secret agent mav who graced himself in our section during the bead toss.  always a pleasure sir!

as mentioned: after a horrid start to the season St. cloud is starting to put it together with a very nice 4 point weekend against UND.   They are going to be a very tough out come playoff time.

Denver waxes miami.   Miami is just going through the motions at this point.  I will have some comments in the ccha thread about them.

WMU and UMD split.   both teams still have some question marks but both very very good teams.   will be interesting to see what happens down the stretch between 2-4 in the conference.

    Elsewhere:

congrats to AIC for locking up atlantic hockey for the 2nd year in a row.

Clarkson and Quinnipiac both with a bad loss this weekend.  Quinnipiac needs a lot of help to get in the NCAA's now.

Eye opening performance by BC in hockey east hanging ten on a pretty good northeastern squad.   it's very possible you could see BC in detroit this year.   in fact I'm calling it now.   BC will make the frozen four.

how about the dumpster fire that providence has become?   how in the world to you get swept by merrimack?   that's super bad.

Congrats also in order to mankato who pretty much locked up the WCHA. (still don't want them in the NCHC though!)

The word of the day is zero.  as in number of goals uno scored.  I know ward is out, but you have to find a way to generate offense someway.  Miami's first sweep since 2017.  larkin looked like the second coming of terry sawchuk.   That absolutely cannot happen.  UNO if they are not careful could easily slide into 7th depending on next week.  UNO very fragile right now.

Congratulations for UND on winning the penrose.  very bad break for WMU as they had a goal waived off during the overtime.    Having watched the video I don't know what the WMU guy was supposed to do to avoid the contact.    bad call and something I think they need to tweak the rules on.  (they also need to look at  the lengthy reviews for 5 minute majors) thats a rant for another time.

interesting battle shaping up for positions 3rd through 5th.   DU/WMU/st. cloud all in the mix there.     I think DU is ripe for a first round upset.

Congrats to BC for capturing the hockey east title.  still standing by my prediction that they are going to make it to detroit.

How about RPI?  winning their last 4 games to earn a bye in the ecac.  first time since 2013 for them.   Owen savory has a .963 save percentage right now.

Also congrats to alaska fairbanks who get to host a first round playoff series.  pretty impressive considering all the uncertainty they have faced this year.

Big ten tournament should be interesting to follow.    throw all those teams in a hat and pick one.   I don't see penn state winning that with their leaky defense.

Time for playoffs! - first a few comments from the final weekend series.

A tale of two games this weekend.   Friday the mavs looked great, saturday not so much.   Mavs have been shut out 3 of the last 4 a cause of concern going into he playoffs.

also the health of saville is a big concern.  Guessing he is done for the year with a concussion.  so it's the austin roden show.  roden is more then capable of of backstopping the mavs.  he's a very good goaltender (even though he was a sieve saturday)

I know the twitterverse was irate after saville got injured, -- this is an unpopular opinion but I didn't see a penality on that play.  the sioux player was just driving to the net.   unfortunate injury to be sure, but think the officials made the right call.

UND wasn't the only team this weekend taking liberties.  saw some whining from UNO fans.  suck it up.

    now to the playoff matchup:

I think the mavs match up better against DU than they would have against WMU.  DU lacks some toughness and if the mavs play physical I think it can throw DU off their game.  DU also has trouble scoring in spots.  bobby brink is still injured and that's a big loss for the pios.  UNO managed two ties against DU already so they can play right with them.

I'm going to go out on a limb and call an upset: UNO in 3

UND-CC -- going with UND in 2.  UND has an interesting goaltender dilemma: do they go with scheel (who has looked somewhat shaky after a good start to the year)  he wasn't very good friday.   personally I would start thome who has played very very well.  UND is also going to be without kawaguchi (possibly)  They should handle CC without him but will need him if they want to make a deep NCAA run

UMD-Miami -- UMD in 2 and it will be easy UMD is 9-1 in their last 10.  Miami is ready for their tee time.

SCSU-WMU -- calling SCSU in 3.  Western has a history of underperforming and st. cloud has played much better as the year has gone along.  think hrenak steals a game and st. cloud finds enough goal scoring to win the series.

    Quick glance elsewhere:

curious to see if air force makes another run in atlantic hockey.  some very intreging matchups any one of those teams can get the autobid.  Going to pick sacred heart to be this years version of AIC and win the tournament

in the ECAC: Harvard and RPI will play in an empty building.   what a weird situation.  personally it seems like an over reaction to me but I guess lots of folks are afrid of this coronavirus thing.  (I'm old enough to remember the big swine flu scare which turned out to be a nothing burger) I harvard to advance only to loose to cornell.  picking clarkson to win the tournament

In the WCHhA: bemidji state hangs on to beat LSSU in 3 and keep their NCAA hopes alive.   how about michigan tech with a big upset of NMU.  Too bad they gonna get steamrolled by mankato.  I like mankato to promply go one and done when the NCAA's roll around.

In hockey east -- no clue who is going to come out of that mess. BC the favorite.  Keep an eye on maine they are getting unbelievable goaltending from swayman.   I also like BU to upset umass lowell.  Northeastern could also give umass trouble.  I expect umass to win in 3

in the big 10: don't look now but michigan is sitting on the NCAA bubble.  I'm going to take the teams that were hot down the stretch: I'm calling michigan to beat ohio state and minnesota to beat penn state.  Michigan makes the NCAA tournament

I had heard Saville could have been available Saturday, but was held back as a precautionary measure. I doubt that source. But I don't think his season is over.

That said. Roden - for the most part - has proven to be Saville's equal. I feel Saville (aside from a bump in the road at CC) was playing really well. Roden looked like he was fighting the puck most of this weekend. But so are the inconsistencies of having freshmen goaltenders.

We are of the same opinion here, Quinn. I saw it the same. You're right: it is a very unpopular opinion among Maverick fans.
