Incoming: A Look Ahead

Coming into this season, I think we all wondered where the scoring would come from. Randl and Mueller have lead the way. Pivonka has boomed. Miller has been there in support. And Tychonick has contributed from the blue line. It's been a decent balance.

But has anyone looked at the incoming recruits and their numbers in juniors? I'm trying to figure out if scoring is up, or if -- for the first time in a long time -- we should be excited about scoring potential arriving at Baxter Arena.

Tanner Ludtke (USHL) 37 points in 35 games

Ethan Whitcomb (USHL) 27 points in 33 games

Jacob Bonkowski (BCHL) 46 points in 39 games

Matthew Maltais (BCHL) 29 points in 32 games

Liam Watkins (AJHL) 56 points in 46 games

There are a couple other 17 year olds committed to Omaha, who are not far off similar notable scoring levels. I suspect we could have a similar list this time next year with Riley Ashe, Raoul Boilard, and Ryden Evers.

I'm also noticing, some names on the recruit list will bring some size that we are currently lacking: Whitcomb, Emmanuelson Charbonneau, and Sawyer Prokopetz.

I started an Evernote last month on new recruits and am trying to compile some information so we can talk about it (and so I can put together a blog post).

The player I've noticed the most (via social media) is Tanner Ludtke (mainly because we follow the Stars). He looks like a good offensive prospect.

These are the players I had for 2023-24... it seems like a lot — which makes me assume some will be in 2024-25.

    • Marcus Broberg  - D
    • Emanuelson Charbonneau - D
    • Kaiden Ellertson - D
    • Tanner Ludtke - F
    • Charlie Lurie - F
    • Sawyer Prokopetz - D
    • Jacob Bonkowski - F
    • Myles Hilman - F
    • Matthew Maltais - C
    • Conner Schneider -  C
    • Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero (RW/C)
    • Liam Watkins - F
    • Ethan Whitcomb - F

Well, now I'm looking at birth years -- to see who might push a year.

'03s: Bonkowski, Borberg, Hilman, Lurie, Schneider, Van Houtte-Cachero

    They're all coming next year.

'04s: Jules Boilard, Charbonneau, Ellertson, Ludtke, Maltais, Prokopetz, Watkins, Whitcomb (and Spicer)

...can all return to juniors without playing as an overager. We know Spicer will (assuming Robbins comes back).

So then we have to figure out who is ready, or who fills a need for a departed player.

Pivonka, Tychonick, and Weiss are all done after this year. I believe both Kucharski and Zab will leave, though I've heard Kucharski does have another year available. Proctor, Randl, and Sullivan also have a COVID year available. I don't see any of them having professional offers, so they could all return.

I'd keep an eye on Mancini. He's likely to receive overtures from the Rangers. And there will certainly be another player or two who portal themselves out of Omaha.

But I see the same roster crunch. That said, adding a couple more players to the roster isn't a big issue for the Mavericks. We're only scratching four players.

I *think* Proctor will be returning. At least, I heard something to that effect a couple weeks ago.

Opening bid for next year's auction is $1000... just to cover the lettering costs.
